Light therapy is the application of light energy for therapeutic purposes. When colours are perceived, what they eye is detecting is bands of wavelengths (measured by nanometers, nm) within the region of visible light of the electromagnetic spectrum. Humans can see visible light from violet (about 400 nm) through the red (about 700 nm). Below 400 nm the light is invisible ultraviolet light and over 700 nm is invisible infrared light.
Different wavelengths of light within the visible spectrum can have different effects on the skin:
