The Wonder Women In Beauty
The Wonder Women In Beauty
In celebration of International Women’s Day we wanted to spotlight a few of our superheroes in beauty, from the founder of Dermalogica, Pelactiv, Minenssey and more.
Kerry-Anne Raiola
CEO, Pelactiv
How did you start your beauty career?
“An opportunity came along for me to invest in a business - a skincare business that had been suffering. I had no beauty background specifically, but I was obsessed with all things skincare, fashion and makeup. Add to that my business background and what did I have to lose? I learned everything I could about the skin, skincare conditions/products, understanding formulations, ingredients, treatments…I just went for it and never looked back.”
How did you come to be in your position at Pelactiv?
“I was brought into the business back in 1999 initially as an investor, and to take over control of the business. I then became Managing Director and have now been CEO for 10 years.”
Jane Wurwand
Founder, Dermalogica
Jane is the co-founder and chief visionary of Dermalogica and The International Dermal Institute post-graduate training centres. Under her leadership, Dermalogica has grown to be the leading professional skin care brand, used by more than 100,000 skin therapists in more than 100 countries around the world.
How and Why Did Jane Start Dermalogica?
When Jane emigrated to the United States in 1983, she saw a gap in professional skin care education, as well as a lack of US-based professional-grade skin care products. She first created the model for advanced industry education, upskilling skin professionals to be successful small business owners. In 1986, Wurwand launched Dermalogica with 27 innovative product formulations free of common irritants found in competitors.
Cheryl Ross
Founder, Minenssey
Why did Cheryl start Minenssey?
As the daughter of a botanist, Cheryl spent her youth in the Australian bush researching the healing power of active botanicals. It was there that she first discovered the transformational effect plant-based beauty can have on the complexion, harnessing the power of the rich Australian terrain.
What was her vision for Minenssey?
She carefully selects evidence-based ingredients, which are harvested using breakthrough technologies, in tried and tested concentrations and combinations. Her overall goal is to improve skin quality, whilst awakening senses to deliver visible results.
Anna Lahey
Founder, Vida Glow
What inspired you to start your business?
I discovered marine collagen while I was travelling overseas. I started with one serve a day and within weeks I saw transformative results in my skin, hair and nails. I spent months researching and educating myself on the science behind marine collagen - and the clinical evidence was there to substantiate the visible changes I experienced.
The idea of ingestible beauty was unheard of in Australia at the time. So, I saw the gap for ingestible formulations that not only addressed common beauty concerns
but delivered real, science-backed results.
As a mother of almost four and business-owner, I know life is fast, busy and at times messy. Which is why I wanted to create products that support the dynamic lifestyles
of women. Streamlining their days with efficacious products that positively impact beauty regimes and help them achieve tangible, long-term benefits.
Vida Glow is my passion, and to be able to empower women through innovative ingestible regimes is something I don’t take for granted.
